Research and Development
With over 90 years of experience in antifreeze / coolant technology and testing, Prestone knows a lot about antifreeze / coolant.
The Prestone coolant engineering, development and testing facility is over 33,000 square foot, housing state-of-the art equipment, in 12 laboratories. Our Prestone Research and Development (R&D) personnel are active in the SAE* and ASTM** organisations. (* Society of Automotive Engineers; ** American Society for Test Materials)
Dr Peter Woyciesjer, Technical Manager, Prestone R&D, was named Chairman of the ASTM Committee for coolants in 2004 and was honoured with the ASTM International Award of Merit for individual contributions to standard activities at the annual ASTM meeting.
Performance and reliability are important to Prestone. Our R&D facility have over 25 million fleet test kilometres accumulated over the last 10 years, to develop and qualify coolants. Prestone hold 25 active USA anti-freeze / coolant related patents. There are 4 solely owned fully integrated production facilities dedicated to anti-freeze / coolant.
And lastly but by no means least Prestone is an OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer – supplier to a number of leading North American and Asian vehicle manufacturers.
Corrosion
Corrosion is the destructive result of a chemical reaction between a metal and or metal alloy and its environment.
All major vehicle manufacturers in the world install antifreeze coolant in new cars and trucks.
It is not just about temperature control, the manufacturer is also concerned with providing a satisfactory degree of corrosion protection for the various metals found in automotive cooling systems: aluminum alloys, cast iron, copper, brass, steel, and various solders.
The basic mechanisms involved in cooling system corrosion are no different from those in other systems and, therefore, methods of control are similar.
Metals are corroded by direct chemical attack or by electrochemical processes. When certain conditions exist, the cavitation-erosion-fretting-corrosion can also occur.

Prestone Command Technical Service Bulletin – Click Here
The Prestone Command Technical Service Bulletin has been designed to remove some of the mystery around HD antifreeze /coolant fluids, share maintenance and testing procedures and assist in providing guidance to HD diesel technicians and truck and fleet owners.
It provides an overview to HD fluid technologies, recommends tools for testing and practical guides for fluid maintenance and when necessary Flush N Fill conversion.
Also included is inspection and testing reference and check lists.
We hope you find it useful prolonging your maintenance periods and increasing your uptime
Please note the IAT / Silicated Conventional coolant mentioned in this bulletin is old technology and as a result not stocked in NZ or Australia by Filpro Automotive.
